Innovations in our academic and professional journey

From scientific research to a real-world industrial solution... a research initiative from Beni-Suef University redefines the concept of sustainability.

What if certain waste materials could be transformed into a means of treating industrial wastewater? And what if, following treatment, that water could be reused within the industrial process?

This is what an applied research initiative in Beni Suef Governorate successfully achieved—a model demonstrating how scientific research can transcend the confines of laboratories and conference halls to deliver real-world solutions to industrial and environmental challenges.

Dr. Bahaa Saleh Shaaban Metwally, a faculty member in the Textile Technology Department at the Faculty of Technology and Education, Beni-Suef University, participated—as part of a joint research team comprising distinguished researchers from the Faculty of Science at Beni-Suef University and the Petroleum Research Institute—in conducting an applied experiment to treat industrial wastewater generated by a garment finishing and dyeing factory in Beni-Suef Governorate.

The project concept was based on utilizing and recycling certain waste materials and integrating them into a comprehensive industrial wastewater treatment system, culminating in the establishment of a pilot treatment plant with an operational capacity of approximately 30 cubic meters per day.

Most importantly, the experiment did not stop at research findings but advanced to the stage of actual industrial application; tests conducted on the treated water demonstrated the treatment system's success in removing the targeted pollutants with an efficiency of up to 100%, thereby enabling the plant to reuse the treated water in its industrial operations.

he initiative holds particular significance as it not only offers a solution to the wastewater problem but also practically embodies the circular economy concept by repurposing waste, reducing fresh water consumption, and reusing water within the industrial process—thereby supporting resource efficiency and enhancing industrial sustainability.

This initiative also aligns with a number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, most notably Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

This experience also confirms that interdisciplinary collaboration—and linking universities and research centers with the industrial sector—can transform scientific knowledge into practical solutions that have a direct impact on protecting the environment, optimizing resource consumption, reducing economic burdens, and bolstering the industry's capacity to achieve sustainability.

The value of genuine scientific research does not end with the publication of results; rather, its greatest value emerges when knowledge transforms into innovation, innovation into application, and application into a tangible impact on the ground.
